The Flames also gave Huberdeau that price tag. I think it's pretty generally understood that the $10.5 million salary was the exact money that they offered to Gaudreau, and it was burning a hole in their pocket.
Expecting Huberdeau to be a franchise player because the Flames overpaid him would be stupid. It's exactly the same kind and degree of stupidity as expecting Nurse to be a #1 defenceman because the Oilers made the same error.
