It's a numbers game outside of the first round. Over the last 10 years, the Flames have also traded away many of their second and third round picks. Now they are acquiring multiple 1st-3rd round picks. The odds are changing in their favor.
2nd and 3rd round picks are also rarely NHL ready. So players like Poirier, Wolf, and Pospisil could still become impact players. Basically, I wouldn't rule out players drafted in the last 5 years.
What the Flames need for a rebuild is a franchise center. Drafting them outside of the 1st is rare. That player will likely have to come from a higher draft or potentially getting very lucky in a trade.
