The worms stop when they get tired. Lynch’s Dune is probably more book accurate in that it shows them as relatively slow moving. Villeneuve portrayed them as going lightning speed which probably is overselling it for the excitement factor. In universe, it’s more like the rider on their back causes them to travel differently by staying on the surface and they eventually tire, stop and the fremen just step off.

The way they show Paul mounting the worm is probably extreme. Keeping in mind he called a massive once in a lifetime sized worm. Most are smaller/slower.

Thank you that makes sense, there are still holes on how they get pregnant women and carriages on them, but that might fill in when I read the books.
