I'm not sure how comfortable I am with letting the car decide on its own when to slam on the brakes. I recall years ago taking a defensive driving course. We were given the scenario like they showed in the Volvo video, but this time there's a cement truck barrellling down behind you unable to stop. The manoeuvre was to slow down, and just before the truck hits your car, you stomp the gas pedal, intentionally rear ending the car in front of you. The truck will still hit you, and there will still be a chain reaction crash, but you are still safer than getting hit from behind at a dead stop.

That, and in the late 80's GM looked at putting radar in their cars to allow the car to tell you if there was an obstruction in the way; like a deer on a dark night. The FCC (or some regulatory body) didn't allow it because it was possible for it interfere with other types of radar like police radar as well as aircraft radar. It wasn't an issue in the concept cars, but the thinking was that if every car had this, there would be too much interference.
