I can see why that would drive you and any graphic designers nuts. It's the same with innovations in engineering--valuable inventions that seem obvious and simplistic after the fact are actually hard to come up with in the first place. I don't think you can put claims about the London logo in the same category, though. It will never be iconic. It will be forgotten in 10 years (hey, can you remember the logo for the Sydney games?). Even in the present, it has no aesthetic appeal to the majority of people.
There are very few iconic logos, and a whole whack of disposable ones in this world. It takes time to reach iconic status, and an olympic logo (other than the rings) will never be around long enough to do that.
For something to garner as much immediate, negative reaction as the London logo has, there's a lot more going on than the basic "I could have done that" jealousy that you have for other things (e.g. the swoosh).
