With trade deadline brings desperation mode, and GMs do panicky things that inflate prices. Especially ones who've just fired a coach and appear to be taking some heat themselves.
I worry that without that variable, we go back to a sterile goalie trade market that, all of a sudden, has more teams looking to use goalies as trade chips. And the potential buying teams can take back some leverage by saying "we'll take a wait-and see" approach with what they have.

I don’t think you’re wrong about the desperation play, but I don’t know if it entirely applies to Markstrom. A lot of those desperation moves are the extra pieces meant to put a team “over the top” and, chances are, teams that need a starting goaltending at this stage of the season realistically know they can’t really get to the playoffs, let alone push themselves over it.
LA would be an exception, I think. But there’s no rush on a trade with Jersey. They know they’re toast with or without him, but know it’s something they need to solve before October.
