I tried to get creative with what I would do in this situation with the Devils. I think my starting point would be something like this:
Markstrom <=> Mercer + '24 3rd Cond. + '26 3rd Cond.
Conditions on the '24 3rd would be based on this season's outcomes and soften the gamble for Fitz. For example, if the Devils have a miracle stretch run and make the playoffs this season then the '24 3rd becomes a 1st in '24 or '25. Conditions on the '26 3rd would also become a 2nd or 1st depending on how the next 2 seasons go for the Devils.
If the Devils ask for retention, or to send Vanecek back, then add on Casey.
