Presumably none of the other suitors for Guentzel were willing to give up a guaranteed 1st. And this for what many considered the top player available at the deadline.
Could just be a down market. Or maybe GMs have twigged onto the fact that spending prime assets on rentals rarely pays off. If this signals a trend, teams will have to exercise more foresight and discipline about their pending UFAs. We might see the market for these guys shift to the UFA+1 offseason.
