Not only does he waste a full season of his core, he also has to wear the massive contract that he signed Meier to, as well as acquiring Toffoli for this season (and now trading him away).
It's not just the fans or owners who are calling him out, his own star players are talking to the media about it.
Also, Mercer comes off of his ELC this year and is going to expect a raise. It is going to be very hard to say that he doesn't deserve the money after saying he is too valuable to trade away.

You don't trade away Cs for Gs. That's the most valuable position for the least valuable position. And with Michael McLeod gone the Devils need to keep their Cs.
Buyers do not sell young, cost controlled guys getting 17+ minutes a night. It is counterintuitive to take away from your roster
