I can see the ownership/management rationale to publicly be optimistic. If you say “we think we can win”, you add more interest/excitement and may get a few more people out to the game. If you say “we’re packing it in” then who is going to buy a ticket? That makes sense to me. As a leader you need to convey optimism and hope to your employees and your constituents to get results. I don’t believe The Flames are in the same financial position or marketing position as The Rangers and can take out a full page in the newspaper and say “we’re going to suck now to be better soon” without it hurting.
I don't believe this is true at all in Calgary. Everyone who even has mediocre knowledge of hockey knows the Flames need to rebuild and are a very long shot to make the playoffs this season. They don't need to sell false hope to educated hockey fans. Flames fans are on board for rebuilding.
