Am I correct that if the flames use their last retention spot on Mangiapane, they will have no retention spots available until July 1st when Hanifin and Tanev’s deals expire? At which point, they would only have 2 retention spots available until Mangiapane’s deal expires on July 1st of 2025.
The only concern I would have for that would be that it means the flames could not retain on any players if they wanted to make a trade at the draft which is two weeks before NHL free agency. I could see some great potential trade value at the draft for players like Markstrom, Coleman or even Andersson (only if it was a big trade offer) by some teams that really want to take a step in the playoffs. Obviously that’s unlikely. These kind of trades might only be possible after July 1st at the earliest.
