Beyond that, the Hronek trade worked for the Canucks because they already had a core of elite young pieces - Hughes, Pettersson, and Demko. Hronek supplements them.
If the Flames try to do that when they haven't even drafted their next star player, it will be a colossal mistake.

It's even less likely they draft a star player with a late pick...If they can get a very good youngish player with a late 1st you do it. That asset becomes part of the organization and may even be traded at a future deadline or draft.
The Flames need some good players if they want to sell tickets, jerseys, hope, ect. This isn't the Southern US where you can just be terrible for years with 4000 fans and not be worried about the stability of the franchise.
