This exactly. If he trades Markstrom for a bag of pucks - its a different scenario where you don't need to make the trade because you can just keep the player. All of these other trades - they have to make them by the deadline or get nothing. He could just say that the offers aren't good enough and keep Hanifin, but that's just cutting off your own nose to spite your face.
