I recalled stumbling upon this blog. Granted this is almost 10 years now, but provides a little insight on how the schedule is created. It would not surprise me if the NHL teams have learned a bit on how to game the system a bit. Sure some teams that have busy arena have less flexibility, but I am sure along the way when submitting open days they found some advantages.
