Calgary didn’t lock them up . That’s all that matters . They failed miserably
They had a chance to lock up MT at the bridge (it may have been an overpay at the time) and JG is the offseason before UFA (Might have been an overpay after the season ) BUT they would have both players still
And it would have cost what , 4? million more combined then they wanted at the time . Sure it might be a overpayment , but you keep your stars
4 million is a 3rd line winger or 4/5 D. You can find minimum salary replacement / drafted players for those spots .
You can’t find stars . Flames (and all small market teams) will need to identify the proper young players to “overpay” earlier in their careers to retain them longer
