I'm thinking precisely because the cap is set to start rising at a normal rate again, and a bunch of guys will leapfrog Elias in the next 4 seasons.
There are already a bunch of mid tier first line players making $8-9 million. Maybe they start pushing to $10-11 million.
If Elias has 3-4 more seasons like last year and this year, you could say he'll be playing at a $12+ level.
I'm also of the opinion that the best NHL players are all underpaid as well so that may bias my opinion somewhat. When guys like Debrincat and Orlov are pulling $8 million, getting a guy like EP under contract at basically any price provides more value to a team.
