I honestly can’t believe it got to this point. Whatever happened and whoever is responsible on either side (I’m sure it’s a mix of a few people and circumstance)… it’s kind of crazy this deal did not get done.

-Flames have a bonafide starting goalie who is having his best season ever and the flames are willing to trade him.
-New Jersey is a team loaded with young talent who has made lots of high picks over the years and is ready to be a yearly contender in the playoffs.
-New Jersey is deep at forward and defence but lacks any kind of quality goaltending both on the big club and in the prospect pool.
-With Dougie on LTIR for the season, New Jersey has the cap space.

It’s such a perfect fit… at least it was 3 weeks ago when this all started and New Jersey was still in striking distance.

I get that New Jersey thought the price for retention was too high… none of us know for sure what that price was but why did they wait 3 weeks before changing their mind and considering a trade without retention?

It feels like such a missed opportunity all around.
