I drive a 4cyl 95 YJ it does ok around town and on the freeway granted it is on 36" off-road tires, heavier axles, and about 100-200 extra lbs in armor and cage material. It would be nice to have a little more power from the I6, but it is not needed if your jeep is going to be a toy.

I have never ridden in a TJ but my Jeep rode pretty rough when it was stock and I would have to say there is no way a TJ can have a worse ride than a YJ.
