NHL GM’s falling all over themselves to sign 8 year deals. MLB has no hard cap and players have longer careers. And they have fewer long term deals per capita.

Worst case is you get a player who walks themselves to free agency or threatens to do so. The Tkachuk situation really serves as warning to the NHL of the importance of having star players wrapped up with sensible deals. The window for a Stanley Cup run is very short and everything needs to go right for it to happen
