The other thing the Flames could do is do the trade with no retention and then just offer Mercer a one year deal at 4.4 million bucks. It would cost a 2nd round pick in compensation but the Devils with no retention on Markstrom would have 14 million to sign 9 players. Allocating 4.4 million to one player would really squeeze them.
