I think it is more likely that the hiccup is around some other variable, like Hanifin. If NJ was also trying to get a sign & trade Hanifin along with Markstrom but then found out that Hanifin would not sign with them, that is the kind of late stage wrench that could have impacted the trade.
I could see NJ still being interested in both Markstrom and Hanifin, even if Hanifin is just a rental. If that gets them to the playoffs, and hopefully Hamilton's return, then that would be a stacked team to run at the playoffs.
That would explain how this has gotten so messy with extra moving parts, namely players with NTCs and agents declining extensions.
