My guess is the Flames accidently leaked out the chat with NJ, or had someone they confided in, leak it out, which isn't proper, and instead of quashing it, just said the price wasn't met and they hadn't gone to Markstrom because it wasn't worth it.
This was what, 3 weeks or so? Markstrom addressed it at the time, pretty well TBQH, and that should be that....the Flames should be telling the media to back off after that, as is done commonly, but the questions remain almost daily for Markstrom, over a situation he wasn't involved in and doesn't control...and the organization (Conroy or the PR crew) hasn't properly dealt with it because media in the room are all over him and others in the room about him, nevermind the others on the block, and it's seemingly more than a distraction for players especially as the team is playing well.
Certainly a lesson for Conroy to back up the player in and with the media, certainly when the player had nothing to do with the rumor but still has to answer questions 3 weeks on.
That all said the media are vultures with this now, Markstrom being slightly annoyed he hasnt has the media shut down on this by the team, is a far cry from the drama being created by the same media about some irreconcilable difference... especially on the eve of the franchise celebrating Kiprusoff.
