The Flames need to capitalize on being bad this season and next. You are about to trade Hanifin. You already traded Tanev. These players are not stupid. The room is gutted with or without Markstrom.
The Flames need to capitalize on his value right now because it simply will never be higher. If you can get more than a 1st round pick for an asset you thought had negative value 12 months ago, you have to do it. It is unlikely they get anything close to that in the offseason and beyond.
Finishing 20th overall in the league is not that different from finishing 25th.
