2004 was the best. But it ruined the franchise's ability to think logically long term.
It seemed like all we had to do was get in, but in reality we were a team that played well defensively and had a hall of famer leading points and goal scoring up front, held back by lack of consistent goal tending. When we acquired better than consistent goal tending (Kipper should be in the hall in my books) we were all of a sudden a contender for multiple years following.
It wasn't a just get in scenario then. It has never been.
