He's a UFA. Markstrom isn't. Like I said, Conroy doesn't have a set time to trade Markstrom. If he held out to try and get a 1st for Tanev he might end up getting nothing in the end. So he took the next best offer.
Trading UFAs wouldn't deflate a team the way trading a player with term would. You send the message to the team you're giving up. By trading UFAs you're just telling them you're getting something for players who are leaving.
The players aren't dumb. They know they aren't a contender where risking losing players for nothing could be worth it.
