It did surprise me when I first came to Alberta how finishing highschool was viewed as a big accomplishment by many. Coming from a place like Kamloops where good paying labour jobs are very rare unless you have good family connections most people were going to some type of college at least.

But I think a university education is a touch over rated and that tech/trade schools are under rated. You learn good hands on skills that will often stay in high demand and the extra work experience you can get will allow you a lot of options very quickly. Although the over rated part of University education can relate to those who go straight to uni not really knowing what they want to do and end up getting nothing accomplished in their first two years. I remember a room mate who always complained that I made more than him even though I went to school for 2 years and he went for 7. Difference was I finished my program in the minimum number of years and he could have been done in 4 himself had he actually worked when he was in school. The fact that I did more in my two years of school than he would have in 4+ and I was working 1100 hours a year more than he was working didn't really don on him. Than when you consider the benefits, pension, and other stuff he got he probably was even with me, and was working way less than I was.
