Foster was the protagonist and is who people remember first and foremost about Contact. That's not what the general public had front of mind when it came to MM a decade and a half later based on the movies he was doing. Contact has more of a cult following since it's release than those Sci-fi movies that are widely rewatched and known today like Independence Day.
I just think the casting initially worked against the film even though his casting would probably be considered spot on in retrospect (and was).
The theory might be a reach, but I struggle to come up with other valid reasons why it didn't score like Oscar quality films typically do. It was outstanding.
