Tanev is an elite positional defenceman who blocks shots, wins pucks, stops passes, makes neat exit passes and can skate very adequately. He is not a punishing defenceman and more than he is a scoring defenceman.

Excellent summary of his game. No surprise why we saw his partners reach new heights in their game.
Who knows how the prospect will turn out, but I like the idea of a pure defensive D prospect complimenting our swath of Offensive D prospects. You can't do that if you always go for generic all around defensemen. If you can develop pairs like Tanev-Hanafin or Tanev-Kylington, you're more dynamic. I have even liked what I've seen from Kylington-Pachal so far.
