On the topic of Nolan/Villeneuve, I dont really like either, but Inception is actually pretty sharp, even though I disagree with the main point of the movie. Leo's character might be the greatest use of self-insertion ever put to film. I suspect the wife is a self insertion too (of Nolan's wife and creative partner, who produced the film).
But the main point of the movie is subversion, in this case convincing (incepting) Westerners to give up their nations and children's birthright. Very clever meta technique.
