Another piece going to one of the top teams in the west in order to make sure the Oilers don't get anywhere. Vegas gets Hanifin? I kid, I kid.

We were all hoping for a 1st, but it just goes to show you how undervalued Tanev is around the league. Dallas will love him. Hopefully Tanev re-signs in Calgary, and if not, good luck wherever he ends up re-signing. He was a great Flame while he was here, and I don't think there exists a poster on this board who doesn't like Tanev.

I wonder if the next pieces move quickly now.

As for this trade, at face value this is a little light. Hoping for a 1st, would settle for a 2nd and a good prospect. This is more like a 2nd and a longshot, as someone posted he was ranked as Dallas' 10th best prospect? It is also rare for defencemen who put up next to nothing offensively to make it to the NHL. However, I am sure that the Flames did their scouting on Grushnikov, so they must like him. Flames are a very good drafting team, and he isn't far removed from the draft, so their book on him + more scouting on him leading up to this trade makes me believe that there is probably more to this kid than meets the eye. On top of this, Dallas is an excellent drafting team - one of the best in the NHL too, so him being ranked 10th may not be such a black mark on him at all.

I have stated that I want as many lottery tickets as possible. I am all for picks + prospects, but specifically picks as I doubt many teams are ever going to trade a blue-chip franchise prospect away. Teams basically have to draft those themselves. This 2nd round pick may be nothing, or it could be the Flames future HHOF. It makes no sense to me to undertake this retool/rebuild and come out of it with the same problem - a bunch of 2nd line and lower players, plus a bunch of at best #2 defencemen and lower, and be stuck in the same mediocrity that this organization finds itself in. Too good to suck, not good enough to win. These picks add up. It allows the scouting staff to really roll the dice on guys that may come with a bit more risk. Maybe if the Flames had 3 second round picks instead of 2, they would have drafted Kucherov instead of Tampa, and it would have been the Flames winning a few cups.

Would have loved a 1st, or the 1st plus that people were hoping for, but the market is the market, and the value was certainly not poor. Way too early to declare a winner and loser, but the value was fair I think at this point.
