Watched it again a couple weeks ago and liked it way more. Plus I read Cole's notes or something like that summarizing the book, so I understood more about the universe going in, which I think you kind of need to really get what the movie is doing. Going in cold on my first watch was a mistake.

I suspect that isn't uncommon. My brother prides himself on having never read a single book in his life, and he couldn't get through Dune. Another person I know read it 20+ years ago and even with a pretty faint idea what was going on in the movie, had a hard time really getting into it.
Judging by the trailer for part 2, it looks like they're going to up the complexity by introducing characters that ought to have been in part 1. My feeling is they're going to make this as easily digestible as the first film, but with the added benefit of the first film having created a foundation to build upon. If that makes sense. I'm too tired to edit this for clarity.
I've got my tickets for Friday morning!
