Even then...what does the best LA package probably look like...they traded their firsts each of the past two seasons, aren't moving Clarke, and are even more cap crunched than New Jersey.

Markstrom (50% retention)

for

Turcotte/Kaliyev
2024 or 2025 1st
B Prospect (don't see anybody as good as Casey they'd be willing to move)
Some type of cap dump

The "rumored" jersey package is still better than that IMO.

I don't know, really just feels like New Jersey is the best partner for a trade here and the Flames may have squeezed too hard.

I get why Nashville would require an absolute overpayment for Saros, he's 28 years old and is having the first average season of his career, but he could still have 6 or 7 years of being an elite goalie left.

But to me requiring that same level of "overpayment" for Markstrom is a mistake, and is overvaluing his strong play on this team right now.

Markstrom is 34 and getting anything substantial in return for him is a huge win. He's having an elite season...but it's still a guy you signed as a UFA who has a .908 save percentage over his 4 seasons as a Flame (ranks 26th in the NHL, Saros is .917 over the same time period).

If Holtz + 1st ++ is on the table that trade should have been completed already.
