Not only are you trading away an 18 year old asset for a 22 year old asset and getting older, you're improving the 2024-2025 roster to (potentially) a point that will cost the Flames a top-10 pick rather than a pick in the high 30s.
Would you still do that? I certainly wouldn't. I would be patient while drafting and developing our own players.
These one-off moves can be viewed as fine, but the Flames need to approach it with a broader perspective - and timing is important.

They aren’t really shortcutting the process if they are using extra assets to get younger players with upside. I don’t think too many players that will materially impact the standings will be available for a late 1st either but if they are you take them and sell Kuzmenko/Mangiapane/Backlund/Markstrom and make the roster worse that way.
