It'll be great to root for. But I don't think it would be smart for the team to do anything to try and accomplish it.

And even more pertinent - because of the 1st owing to MTL, they only have two choices for next year: either be a contending playoff team (top 10 in the league), or be bottom 10 (which is infinitely more realistic).

They won't say it publicly, but they have to know that next year is the one year where they shouldn't do anything with the purpose of being more competitive. Trading Markstrom is the perfect move to (silently) accomplish the one-year tank.
Doesn’t Montreal have the option to take this years pick if it’s 20-32?
