That is why the comment of overplaying one's hand. Have a plan and execute. Yes, plans need to be malleable, but not to the point of causing them to fail. Understand where your commodities fit into the larger plan and recognize when it is time to move them. When you have an over-performing asset like Hanifin and Markstrom, who will not be here for your planned 2027 debutant ball, move them and get the assets that will move the team forward. Getting a possible future core player out of a Markstrom trade is one that should be leveraged. Don't overplay it by asking for more when you get that possible core piece. If the Flames could turn Markstrom into just Holtz or Mercer (most likely Holtz) that is a core piece for the next six to ten years for a player that will be long out of the game ion the same window. That's a huge win. Turning Hanifin and Tanev into assets that fill gaps is just as important and can't be overplayed like some are suggesting (taking it to the wire to possibly squeeze teams). This will be a transformative trade deadline for the team one way or another. This can't be screwed up.
