It does suck to have another trade get hyped and then fall apart lol. On to Hanifin and Tanev speculation

The problem is, you could acquire Markstrom today but due to immigration he probably can't play until next Friday's game in Anaheim (if you're lucky. Last year, Lazar took 8 days to get his visa after being acquired from Vancouver).
So, the Devils could acquire Markstrom today then proceed to lose to Montreal, Tampa Bay and San Jose. Season. Over. They almost need to at least see what the weekend brings at this point nevermind the complexities that might be surrounding the deal.
The other part is, Markstrom is 34. If you're truly done this year as far as playoffs are concerned, what kind of goalie is he going to be next season? You look at the decline of a goalie like Devan Dubnyk where he had a solid season at age 32/33 in 2018-19 but then dropped right off a cliff. Within two seasons, he was out of the league.
When will it happen for Markstrom? If I were to guess, I'd say probably not next season but would I give up all those assets based on my guess? I don't think so, not if I knew that I couldn't at least get a playoff run this year out of it.
