I think it comes down to most people in Canada only see the big cities in the US, the places interesting enough for foreigners to have heard to them. Most foreigners have no idea how bad rural and small town USA actually is. And wow it is WTF bad.

The crazy thing is media wise it is portrayed totally opposite, like the cities are the bad parts, when they are actually so much nicer and safer. Having personal done both, I would feel safer walking down the sketchiest street in San Francisco with money literally hanging out of my pockets, than I would driving through Stockton.
Full disclosure, I am a Calgarian who lived in SF and has driven to Stockton many times.

Stockton is a small town with big city problems. It's often typecast as the murder capital of California. I would never recommend anyone visit there unless you have to, in my case I have family who live there. Those that choose to live in Stockton permanently, are on a constant crusade to stop the endless pipeline towards gangs, crime and illiteracy. California in general has a ton of extremes and yes, you only see the best parts of California upvoted to your phone.

When I heard that Calgary was going to have an AHL affiliate in Stockton, I was waiting for the team to back out at some point, due to the criminal elements associated to the town. In particular, if you are a young kid in town to play pro hockey, you would be an easy target for criminals to shake you down. I was pleasantly surprised nothing major had ever happened to any of the Flames prospects over the tenure of the Flames holding court in Stockton.

As for what Adam posted to his socials, it will be extremely difficult to come back from what will be online forever.
