I think part of it is that they mandate that employees work on side projects one day a week. That is a heck of an idea - it keeps employees interested, develops their skills, and sometimes results in innovative projects that are released to the public.
I was just reading that they developed high efficiency power supplies for their servers and are helping get the tech made viable for the general public. They just bought a company that makes a "sandbox" for your internet browser, so if a website tries to install something using a browser vulnerability it doesn't realize it isn't actually installing it.
You've gotta love the "Don't be evil" corporate mantra, although I'm sure they bend that every once in a while.
