Last season, Devils finished third overall and had to play the second overall team (Hurricanes) in round two after beating the 107 point Rangers (9th overall) in round one.

It's also the only division where the 7th place team (Pittsburgh) still has a legit shot at the playoffs.
If they get into third they will in all likelihood face the 2nd place team with the least amount of points. Suspect the Oilers end up passing the Hurricanes in terms of who finishes second and gets the most points.

In the Atlantic at third place you would have to face the 3rd best team and then the best team. In the Pacific you would currently face (based on winning percentage) the 8th best team and then the 2nd best team and in the Central you would face the 6th best team and then the 5th best team. Only the Central may be weaker based on standings.
