Yes, I view them as similar too. Actually I'd say Markstrom > Saros, overall but especially this year.
So I know a lot of fans here the past week or so have been hoping for a package somewhere in the neighborhood of Markstrom retained for Mercer, Casey, 1st.
If Nashville is open to trading Saros for Holtz + 1st, I'd personally much rather do that if I was NJ. Don't have to give up Mercer or Casey, and Saros and Markstrom project similarly from year to year (Markstrom is better this year and Saros was better last year).
If NJ makes that deal with Nashville instead, as a Flames fan would you be bummed out that we missed out on Holtz + 1st for Markstrom? I personally would be. Looking at past trades for goalies, i don't think you can get a player like that often.
It's good that we are allegedly pushing NJ pretty hard. But it's not like we are the only option they have, even if we might be plan A for them. I dont mind the posturing, but if there's a deal involving Holtz + 1st, my personal opinion is we should go for it.
