Saros is signed this year and next whereas Markstrom has two more years following this season. New Jersey is currently set up where they basically have to make noise in the next 2-3 years as they have some players who are going to require significant raises (notably Hughes and Nemec). Having Saros essentially further complicates their cap situation when Hughes is up and they are already tight for cash.
I understand that Saros is younger and all but if New Jersey thinks that Daws will be ready in three years to take a true number one role, Markstrom would cost less than Saros, better fit their window and provide similar leadership for Daws that Saros could provide.
This is all of course considering retention on Markstrom. So in essence I would say that NJ would be paying Mercer straight across for Markstrom and would have to pay Mercer ++ for Saros, which doesn't make sense considering everything above.

That might be the board consensus which tends to underrate the value of our players, most of what I have heard is similar value .
