Monahan deal was 6.375 million in what the flames considered dead cap for a 1st. Keeping 25% on Markstrom would be about 3.5 mil I think, spread over 2.5 years. So maybe the thought in the proposal is that 25% is worth a 2nd because it is significantly less money - the difference from my perspective is that Monahan was playing for the team eating the money and they got some value for it, even if it was just projected to be in the role of a 3rd line center for 1.5 mil or so. The Flames would be paying Markstrom to play for Jersey getting nothing at all for that 3.5 million so I would think 25% retention is worth a 1st here too.
