the 80% vs 100% thing really isn't that complicated.

You can set the charge level you want to stop at.
So usually mine is set to 80%.
When I know I'm going on a road trip, I just set the charge level to 100% ahead of time and when I'm ready to hit the road, I'm sitting with 100% on the battery.
