I think it really depends on the premium they think they'll have to pay now vs. the off-season, comparative to a long playoff run with Markstrom. Now that things are in motion, from a business standpoint Fitzgerald's attempt may be seen as a failed push. No doubt NJ has enough young guns that they can afford to pay a bit to go for it to get that playoff revenue, which would be very lucrative in ownerships eyes, especially with a young team where "anything can happen". I have no doubt now they're all-in without saying so. They're probably checking backup options as due diligence but if they're fixated on Markstrom, and don't come out with him it would be seen as a failure with ownership. Fitzgerald is 4 years into his tenure there...he's gotta put it together around now. That business politics side of things can't be forgotten about.
