Kessel is a cheap insurance policy. No one is expecting him to be a productive member of a team but if someone goes down in the playoffs having a veteran to call upon is never a bad thing. Plus he played for Tocchet before in Arizona so he should be aquatinted with the system at the very least.
Low risk and likely low reward signing. Plus he has won and can provide some mentorship to players who have barely sniffed the playoffs before in the bubble.

Tocchet was with him in Pittsburgh too as assistant coach and was closest to him as well
Outside of situations chasing a game seems like a 4th line guy (8-10 mins a game) who can help 2nd unit PP
I'd take a flyer on him over what Edmonton did with Perry anyday
