Ronald Reagan was senile in his second term (which is why it’s funny to see Republicans freaking out over Biden).

But think about how this would have played out. Some faction of the Democratic party steps up and says Biden is not fit to continue serving. That he’s so bad the party needs to take an extraordinary measure that hasn’t been taken since before the Civil War. Candidates emerge. They’re all asked why they’re running, and they say Biden is no longer up to the job.

Meanwhile, Fox News, the Republicans, and Trump are having an absolute field day. The news every night leads with Democrats saying Biden isn’t fit to continue to serve as president.

And then, since there’s no clear successor to Biden, the Democrats engage in a bruising nomination race. The usual fissures between the progressive and moderate wings open. More Republicans doing cartwheels at their good fortune.

And after all that, there’s a good chance Biden still wins, only now he’s been damaged by a nomination race. Or someone like Harris, who polls even worse than Biden, wins the nomination.

The adults in the room could foresee how this would play out. Which is why they’ve closed ranks around Biden.
