The trouble with trading Markstrom this season is that most teams would need the Flames to retain salary on this year's cap. But if you trade a player with time remaining on his contract, the retention has to be the same percentage for every year of the deal.

So maybe the Devils can only add Markstrom this year if the Flames retain $2 million, but then the Flames have to retain $2 million next year and the year after. But next year, with the cap going up, they could add Markstrom with the Flames only retaining $1 million. That could make a big difference in the asking price.
I think Devils could make it work this season with no retention. They have $9.5 million in space due to LTIR. They might be more worried about next season where they'd have a few challenges once Hamilton is back and counting again.
