Another point to consider is game theory. Now that it’s out there in the open he can be had, NJ has to have more pressure in case someone like the Leafs or Avs come to the fold and take him. Then those offseason plans are to go back to the board and take option B.
Anyway, I think both sides are playing chicken. It’s best to get it done before the deadline for both sides. New Jersey for the above reasons. Calgary because they get a better draft position this year.

i think a team would need to be in a "win now" mode like Vancouver and think they have really high chances to be a real contender make a big pitch for Markstrom. I don't think the Devils are in that category. Judging by their fanbase reactions online, many already feel this season is lost after losing Hughes for awhile. They do recognize goaltending is their weakspot.
