This was more of an experiment than anything.
A while back I bought a couple of small-scale WWI planes (the molds are like 70 years old, so not the greatest kits) with the intention of doing something new and unusual, which ended up becoming this stab at a 3-D painting. Used a shallow box and tried painting an aerial landscape, then stuck the planes into an action scene. We got flak, we got smoke, we got bullet holes and spinning propellers, and we got some clouds (I'm definitely going to get rid of the cloud at the top of the frame - way too distracting). Advantage of the frame is that this can be mounted on a wall for display instead of on a shelf. didn't go exactly as I'd hoped, but still forward progress:
