It depends on if your phone will support eSIMs and multiple SIMs, but what I did when I went to the States a few months ago was buy a data-only eSIM for the US and turned off data roaming on my regular SIM but kept it active for calls and texts. As long as you don't reply to the text or answer the call, you won't be charged roaming (or at least I wasn't on Koodo).
That's also useful if you need to receive 2FA messages to log in to things while you're travelling.
Also, if your phone is inactive, won't the undelivered text messages just sit and wait until your SIM becomes active again? It's like when your plane lands, and everyone switches their phones out of airplane mode and you suddenly hear a bunch of text notifications all over the plane.
